Lloyd Turtinen grew up in northern Minnesota near Duluth. At an early age, he developed an appreciation for the woods and the animals that made up that biome.  As an hunter, fisherman, and trapper, he learned to appreciate the habits and haunts of many animals.

Lloyd majored in Biology at the University of Minnesota-Duluth followed by a stint in the Army during the end of the Viet Nam war. Following his discharge, he returned to graduate school to study in a relatively new program entitled Wildlife Disease at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.  He researched diseases of wild birds and spent many hours mist netting and raising birds in captivity to study viral and protozoan diseases. Later he received a doctorate in Virology at the University of Kentucky-Lexington. Recently Lloyd retired as Professor of Microbiology at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire where he taught a number of microbiology courses including a course called Infectious Disease Ecology. He continues to teach this course and use some of his photographs in his lectures. Look at the blog on this site where he discusses various disease outbreaks in wildlife that have implications for human health.

Many of his photographs were taken from his kayak. It is possible to silently sneak up on waterfowl without scaring them. Yes his Nikon camera equipment is insured and no it hasn't fallen in the water yet. Watch for options to purchase prints and other formats of these photographs in the near future.  There are many more prints to be displayed.

Lloyd uses  Nikon D500 and a D800e bodies with Nikon  500 F4 and 300 F/2.8 G AF-S VR lens with a Nikon 1.4X Teleconverter and a Tamron 150-600mm zoom lens. The VR allows him to handhold most shots and give him the best flexibility in the field for quick shots.
